You can catch up on past weeks here.
So far I’ve shared look-for less-ideas for:
This week, I decided to share BEDS! Specific platform beds.
Now, buying an affordable bed can be a little tricky because I don’t think you should go for the cheapest possible bed. There are definitely quality differences. You definitely want to make sure you are buying a quality bed so it will actually last. So, I tried to choose High and Low options that were both of good quality.
I think some of these are going to surprise you!
What’s a platform bed?
Since we’re narrowing in on affordable platform beds for today’s article, I thought I’d start by defining exactly what a platform bed is (in case there’s any confusion).
A platform bed is a type of bed frame that provides a solid base for a mattress without the need for a traditional box spring or foundation. A platform bed frame typically consists of a raised platform or slatted frame that supports the mattress directly. You’ll often see wooden slats where the mattress sits.
Platform beds usually have a simple and sleek design with a modern style. Think clean lines and a low profile aesthetic. Because you don’t need traditional mattress foundations, they are a popular option for small space living.
They are known for their stability and durability, as well as their versatility in accommodating various mattress types, including memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses. I love that you can use them regardless of what type of mattress you have!
Platform beds are popular for their modern and minimalist interior design style, but they are totally available in a wide range of styles, materials, and finishes, so you can find something you will like – I promise.
And keep reading if you want to get a good deal on something that looks like the high-dollar experience options, but without the extra cost!
Other Types of Beds
While we’re at it, here are some other types of beds, outside of platform beds that you could choose from!
- Canopy Bed: For those who want to feel like royalty, canopy beds feature a frame with posts and a fabric covering, creating a cozy and dreamy atmosphere.
- Bunk Bed: Perfect for maximizing space in kids’ rooms or dorms, bunk beds stack two or more beds vertically, providing sleeping space for more than 1 person. Check out our boy’s shared room with a bunk bed here!
- Murphy Bed: Ideal for small apartments or multipurpose rooms, Murphy beds can be folded up against the wall when not in use, offering extra floor space during the day.
- Daybed: A combination of a bed and a sofa, daybeds are great for lounging, napping, or accommodating guests. These are a great option for a guest room! They often have twin-size mattresses and are designed for relaxation. Sometimes there’s a trundle bed underneath that rolls out to provide a 2nd sleeping space or to combine with the twin-size mattress for a larger sleeping area. Two twin mattresses pushed together is about the same width as a king-size bed, but shorter in length.
- Sofa Bed: A functional solution for guest rooms or living areas, sofa beds can be converted from a comfortable couch to a bed, providing a convenient sleeping option for guests in a living room or even a home office.
- Four-Poster Bed: With tall posts at each corner, four-poster beds add a touch of elegance and grandeur to the bedroom, creating a focal point. You’ll most often see these in a master bedroom.
- Storage Bed: These beds come with built-in drawers or compartments underneath the mattress, providing extra storage space for bedding, clothing, or other items. This is a good option in a kid’s room.

Platform Bed #1
Upholstered Platform Bed: HIGH | LOW
While the price tag is VERY different, the overall look is virtually the same between these two upholstered beds with a modern look. The quality of the fabric is probably different. But, if the mattress supports are similar, I don’t see why you can’t get the same look for less with this one!
Upholstered beds with wingback designs, like these, offer a blend of comfort and style for modern bedrooms. It’s obvious why they are popular choices when you see bedrooms that have been designed by interior designers. The upholstered frame creates a cozy atmosphere while making a chic statement!
Platform Bed #2
Wooden Spindle Bed: HIGH | LOW
I think that’s a steal for the affordable option! Gotta love an affordable price on a bed with a wooden frame.
Spindle wood beds bring a timeless, yet modern vibe to bedrooms with their clean lines and minimalist appeal. They offer a simple design that complements various décor styles (but are popular with the mid-century modern style that has really taken off in recent years), making them a smart choice for anyone aiming for a contemporary look in their bedroom.
Platform Bed #3
Another surprise for me. A solid wood bed will never go out of style and I don’t think you can go wrong with either option of these top picks with a solid wood frame.
Wood beds bring warmth and natural beauty to modern bedrooms, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Their timeless appeal and durability make them a versatile choice that can effortlessly blend with contemporary décor.
Platform Bed #4
Tufted Channel Upholstered Bed: HIGH | LOW
Not gonna lie, I love the Low option here more than the High! But they are both so great. The height of your mattress would be a lot lower with the High option because it looks like it sits right on the floor, rather than being raised up by wooden feet. Just something to keep in mind!
A tufted channel upholstered bed is the perfect choice if you want to bring in the feel of luxury to your bedroom. It may just be in style right now though. So keep that in mind if you’re going to purchase either of these modern platform beds!
Platform Bed #5
My favorite interior design trend right now is cane furniture. I’ve been seeing cane and rattan everywhere and I have to say I’m loving the trend (even when it comes to DIY cane furniture projects).
I was truly shocked by this one. They look so similar! I feel like I may just go buy the Low option right now! It is really a beautiful bed!
Beds with cane accents add a touch of texture and organic charm to modern bedrooms, by infusing them with a fresh, bohemian flair with a natural look. The unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design makes them a stylish and on-trend choice for today’s interiors.
See! I told you that you don’t have to spend a fortune on the furniture in your house! You can get the look of expensive modern looks at a better price point! When it comes to platform beds, there are a lot of options for a new bed frame that looks expensive but doesn’t cost too much.
Which of these best platform bed frames on a budget was your favorite? Were you surprised by any of the cost differences between the high and low options on these?
I’ll be back soon with another edition of Get The Look For Less!
