What’s the Best Rug Size for a Queen Bed?
When it comes to creating a bedroom oasis, every detail matters, and choosing the right rug size is no exception. In this guide, we’ll explore three popular rug sizes—8×10, 6×9, and 9×12—and provide examples of how to expertly position your rug and queen bed for a bedroom that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Transforming your bedroom into a cozy retreat involves careful consideration of every design element, and one key decision is how to place your queen bed on top of a rug.
The right rug can add warmth, style, and comfort to your space. However, an awkwardly positioned rug or one that’s too big or too small can make the room feel disheveled.
Ultimately, your choice depends on the room size, personal preferences, and the overall design aesthetic you want to achieve in your bedroom. Here are a few tips for choosing the right rug size for your queen bed.

Tips for Choosing the Right Rug Size for a Queen Bed
When placing a rug under a queen size bed, it’s essential to ensure that there is enough rug extending beyond the sides and foot of the bed to create a balanced and visually pleasing look.
A good rule of thumb is to have at least 18 inches of rug on each side and at the foot of the bed – no matter the bed or rug size. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also prevents the rug from appearing too small for the space.
It may take a little rearranging and repositioning but there are several different placement options for queen beds and rugs.
Here are a few different options for bedroom rug placement.
- The whole bed frame and two nightstands fit on the rug. Typically, this option isn’t feasible with a king bed but could work with a queen size bed.
- The lower half of the bed and optional bench are on the rug, leaving the nightstands and the head of the bed on the floor.
- The lower third of the bed and bench on the rug. This option is great for larger bedrooms and rugs with unique designs that you want to see.
The great thing about a queen bed frame is that it almost always works with standard (and more budget-friendly) rug sizes. Obviously, the size (and shape) of the room and rug will greatly impact what furniture can fit on the rug.
When it comes to a queen-sized bed, there are three (or four) standard sizes available:
- 9×12 (Good for Queen Bed)
- 8×10 (Great for Queen Bed)
- 6×9 (OK for Queen Bed) – works in a small bedroom
- 5×7 (OK for Queen Bed) – only in very small bedroom
8×10 Rug Size Under Queen Bed (Rating: Great)
An 8 foot x 10 foot rug is the ideal rug size for queen beds as it provides more coverage.
With an 8×10 rug, you can place the rug horizontally underneath the bed, ensuring that it extends beyond the sides and foot of the bed. With this option, you have roughly 18″ of rug on each side of the bed, so you can place nightstands somewhat on the rug too, while still offering coverage on all sides of the bed.
For a more dynamic look, consider slightly off-centering the bed on the rug. For example, the top third of the bed and nightstands are left off of the rug while the bottom two-thirds of the bed and optional bench are on the rug, like the photo below.
This can create a stylish asymmetry, especially if you have nightstands or other furniture that align with the off-center placement.
9×12 Rug Size Under Queen Bed (Rating: Good)
A 9 foot x 12 foot rug is another option that works well for queen beds, but can tend to feel a little “too big”.
I recommend reserving this option for larger bedrooms or bedroom suits with heavier or more ornate designs. Otherwise, simple bed frames and minimal furniture pieces will appear overwhelmed and unbalanced by a 9 x 12 rug.
A 9×12 area rug can be placed in a similar manner to the 8×10, with the rug extending even further beyond the bed, allowing for ottomans and other pieces of furniture at the foot of the bed.
9×12 rug placement with queen
Since this is a larger rug size, here are two ideas for rug placement if you’re using a 9×12 rug with a queen sized bed:
1. Full Room Coverage
Place the rug horizontally under the bed, allowing it to extend well beyond the sides and end of the bed. This creates a luxurious feel. Consider placing additional bedroom furniture (like a bench) on the rug for a cohesive look.
2. Layered Look
Layer a smaller rug on top of the 9×12 rug for added texture and visual interest. Place the queen bed on the smaller rug, ensuring that there’s a border of the larger rug visible around the edges. This option would work really well in larger rooms. You can learn how to layer rugs like an expert here.
6×9 Rug Size Under Queen Bed (Rating: OK)
The 6 foot x 9 foot rug is a slightly smaller option, perfect for those who want a more compact rug under their queen bed. While this is not the first choice for a queen-sized bed, it will still create a balanced feeling if you’re working with a small bedroom.
To make this option work, place the rug under the bed but not under the nightstands (as seen in the photo above). Even though this is smaller than the 8×10, this rug size will still provide ample coverage on all sides of the bed and won’t feel too small or too large.
5×7 Rug Size Under Queen Bed (Rating: OK)
Even a small 5 foot by 7 foot rug could work under a queen size bed in a small bedroom. If you go with this small rug size, you’ll want to position it horizontally under the foot posts only on the bed, as shown in the photo above.
Rug Alternative for Bedrooms: Runners and Accent Rugs
If you can’t find a rug you’re smitten with, using runners or smaller accent rugs along the sides of the bed is a great option too! This adds warmth to a room without fully committing to a large rug. Plus, it’s WAY easier on the budget!
A common size for runners is 2’6″ x 8′ or 2’6″ x 10′. These are placed vertically on each side of the bed, providing length to the room without covering up the existing flooring.
Accent rugs (like 3×5) are great for filling empty floor space and can create a chic and balanced appearance while still maintaining functionality.
Both options are excellent choices for those who prefer a minimalist look!
Striking the right balance between aesthetics and functionality can be a real challenge when it comes to selecting the perfect rug size for their bedroom with a queen-sized bed.
Whether you opt for a generously sized rug that frames the bed or choose the simplicity of runners and accent rugs, the key is to create a harmonious and inviting space that reflects your style and makes your bedroom a true sanctuary.
Feel free to experiment with different rug sizes and placements until you find the perfect combination that you LOVE!
